Hanging Dovetail Frame

A$290.00

Take a step back from emissions intensive custom framing towards a sustainable, reusable and stylish display solution.

Introducing our hanging dovetail frame with platform mount. This frame will suit A6/4×6”, A5, A4 and A3 items. Just choose your mount at checkout.

The all-timber profile has a built-in cleat for quick and safe hanging (no wire or d-rings needed). Eight oversized splines keep everything together and a sliding dovetail key on the side gets you classy access to the platform mount inside. The custom platform mount is intuitively designed and allows you to store and display any standard size piece safely behind a piece of reflection-free glass using conservation-grade mat.

What is a platform mount?

The platform mount system is easy to use and swap-out is quick, and safe - no flexi points, adhesives, tape or framing skills required. Simply put, you have a 100% reversible and conservation-grade mount that can be handled with ease at home - just good clean archival-grade mounting. Simply slide the dovetail key, slip out the mount, flip it open, chuck in your item, close it up and slide it back in place - no hectic handling skills required. Down the line we'll be bringing out different sized frames and mounts, including single and double-sided ones for the desktop dovetail frames. The mat itself is cut from offcuts of either 100% cotton or buffered alpha cellulose conservation grade 4 and 2 ply stock. We are working on getting a supplier for recycled or reconstituted mat at a suitable thickness.

Explain the joinery!

Splines, we love them. They keep the frame looking great and make it extra strong by increasing the surface area of a join which means more glue and wood-to-wood contact for a better hold. They can be cut in different ways but here they are oversized and placed on the back of the frame where they extend well beyond the actual mitre and thus provide even more strength. Wide splines like these this aren't possible on a normal frame as they block access to the back. This isn't an issue with a side loading design. We’ve even placed four additional splines at the front side which has provides more than enough holding power to deal with the added lateral force of operating the sliding dovetail key.

And the dovetail key??

This frame is truly bespoke and we're very proud of the r & d that's gone into it - like the sliding dovetail key. Prized for it’s strength and aesthetics, dovetails have been a cornerstone of woodworking joinery for a long time. We’ve used them because the side-loading design means you need a keyway to access the space inside the frame. What better way to secure this keyway than with a tried and tested sliding dovetail! Precisely machined from matching timber, we’ve trialled and designed this feature to get a smooth balance between friction and workability. Just gently slide the key to access the mount and slide it back on when you are done - neat.

How do I hang it?

This frame has a cleat machined into the moulding itself, so you don’t need d-rings or wire to pop it on your wall. Just hang it off a screw or two. A cleat, 'French cleat' or 'split-batten' is a system of hanging something on the wall. Trusted by art handlers for its strength and flexibility, the cleat is used for storage or display in a seamless manner directly on a wall or frame. With an all-in-one profile, you can simply hang the frame straight on a screw or nail. It can be hung both portrait or landscape.

I have a different sized piece. Will it fit in this frame?

Yes! Just send us an inquiry with the measurements and we will make a mount to suit. Turnaround is longer for custom mounts but we promise its worth the wait.

All frames are made with salvaged timber, shaped and assembled by hand in the Mount Framing workshop on unceded Gundungurra, Dharug and Wiradjuri land.
