The Mount Framing Story

Mount Framing is a bespoke framing studio run by artist Bryden Williams.

From humble beginnings in a backyard shed on Gadigal and Wangal land in Tempe in 2018, Mount Framing has since evolved into an established framing studio now located in Little Hartley, on Gundungurra and Wiradjuri country behind the Blue Mountains.

All our frames are made by hand using salvaged and recycled timber collected from a range of local sources. Servicing the Greater Sydney and Blue Mountains area, Mount Framing do robust, bespoke and refined picture frames with a considered environmental footprint.

Mount Framing Founder, Bryden Williams

I am a picture framer, art installer and artist. I live and work on Gundungurra and Wiradjuri land in the Blue Mountains where Mount Framing operates.

I graduated with a Master of Fine Art from Sydney College of the Arts in 2017. I have a passion for working both solo and collaboratively with found-object sculpture, installation and photography. For more about my practice please check out my artist website.

Professionally, I have a wealth of experience working with artists, technicians and curators as an art installer and gallerist, most notably as Gallery Coordinator at Firstdraft through a period of rapid growth in 2017-2019.

Since starting Mount Framing in 2020 I’ve been privileged to receive industry knowledge and support from some of Naarm and Eora's best framers, technicians and business operators and I continue to learn countless tips and tricks from both my peers and clients in the art community. My art practice forms the foundation and ethos upon which Mount Framing is built. We champion the mindful use of recycled materials in the picture-framing industry through sustainable and locally sourced materials and a network of suppliers. As artists tend to do, I seek out new challenges and experiences and I believe picture framing is a collaborative effort with enormous rewards.

FAQ:

Where are you based?

Mount Framing operates from Little Hartley on Wiradjuri/Gundungurra land. We serve Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and The Central Tablelands. Mount Framing also services interstate clients.

I am from Victoria / Qld / interstate. Can I frame with you?

We have a proven track record of successfully collaborating with clients and artists from all over the country. Our reliable freight suppliers ensure that your project will be handled with the utmost care and efficiency. So, if you're located elsewhere and require our expert framing services, don't hesitate to contact us today.

Where do you get your timber from?

At Mount Framing, we believe in using a wide range of unique and sustainable sources to create beautiful frames with character. We source materials from unconventional places like demolition sites, local renovations, recycling centres, and reclaimed timber merchants. We've even used flooded trees from the bottom of a lake in Tasmania (Hydro Wood), forgotten boards from underneath a client’s house, salvage logs, old piers, and end-of-use furniture. Anything that isn't new can end up in our timber supply.

Where do you get your glass from?

Most of our frames are made with Ultra Vue premium picture framing glass due to its high clarity and reflection-blocking properties. We also upcycle old picture-frame glass, vintage sheet glass and off-cuts as much as possible. If you need museum glass we can get that in too. Generally, we steer away from acrylic sheets as its floppy nature is prone to distracting reflections and the fine acrylic dust tarnishes the sawdust collection.

What are your turnaround times?

After a quote has been accepted and deposit paid it's generally 4 to 5 weeks until the frame is ready. If you are short on time just let us know, certain jobs can be expedited.

Do you sell your frame moulding/profiles?

Yes, although we mostly produce small batches of mouldings made using reclaimed and recycled timber for in-house use. However, if you are a framer looking for a supplier, a hobbyist or an artist/maker do get in touch, we'd love to help - a few metres, short lengths, long lengths or bulk, we can probably supply you with reclaimed and recycled timber moulding to suit your needs.

Do you produce ready-made frames?

Yes. Head over to the online shop for a small range of bespoke products made from reclaimed and recycled timber. These mostly suit small items for desktop use however we plan to make a range of exhibition-ready kit frames in the future. Keep checking back, or, if you have an idea for a new product, please drop a line via the contact page

Where is your pricing?

Due to the highly varied and custom nature of framing our prices aren't listed online. For a detailed quote or just a rough outline get in touch for a no-obligation quote.

Are you hiring?

We often seek out skilled technicians, makers and subcontractors in the fields of canvas stretching, artwork conservation, timber salvaging and custom finishing. If you have general art-making skills and a passion for the handling of art in all its forms, or just a penchant for tinkering, please get in touch. Mount Framing loves collaborations.
